Why every online store that accepts AI agents needs a gateway
AI shopping assistants will track, cancel and return orders for your customers. Six things that go wrong when they reach your store directly, and how a gateway like Allowfy fixes each one, on Shopify, Salla, Zid and WooCommerce.
AI agents are coming to your store, whether you plan for it or not
Customers are starting to ask AI assistants to deal with stores for them: track an order, cancel one, return one. Assistants will reach your store one way or another. The only choice you have is how: directly, guessing their way through your pages, or through a front door you control.
Here are six things that go wrong when agents reach a store directly, and what a gateway does about each.
1. You can't tell agents apart
A request that says "I'm a trusted assistant" proves nothing. Without a gateway, a well-behaved assistant and a fraud script look the same.
With a gateway: every agent signs its requests with its own key. New agents wait for your review, trusted ones are allowed, and any of them can be blocked instantly.
2. Customers hand their passwords to agents
To act for a customer on a normal website, an agent needs to sign in as them. That usually means the customer gives the agent their password, and if the agent is compromised, so is the account.
With a gateway: the customer signs in with you, never with the agent. In Allowfy, they receive a one-time code at the email of their store account and enter it on your page. The agent only gets access to that customer's orders, and the customer can disconnect it at any time.
3. Nothing limits what an agent does
A website has no idea that 30 returns in an hour from one assistant is unusual.
With a gateway: every action has a rule, and anything without one is refused. Reading can be allowed, cancellations and returns can need the customer's approval, large amounts can go to your team, and limits can apply per customer over time, counted across every assistant.
4. Customers approve vague intentions, not exact terms
"Return my order" is an intention. "Return order 1042 and refund 49 to the original card" is a term.
With a gateway: the customer approves the exact terms in their assistant. If anything changes after that, the old approval no longer applies.
5. Network failures cause double actions
If your store processed a return but the answer got lost, a naive retry processes it again.
With a gateway: each action runs at most once, with the operation's ID as its key. An outcome that stays unknown is held for your team to settle, never guessed.
6. No record when something goes wrong
When a customer says "I never asked for that", you need to show who asked, what was approved and what happened.
With a gateway: every step lands on a signed, chained record you can export and verify. And an emergency stop halts every agent at once.
Which platforms does this work with?
Allowfy connects to the platforms most stores already use:
- Salla: connect with an access token today; the Allowfy app for the Salla App Store is on its way.
- Zid: connect with the tokens from your Zid app.
- WooCommerce and WordPress: connect in one click, and the Allowfy plugin publishes your agent file on your own domain.
- Shopify: connect with an Admin API token from a custom app.
- Anything else: your own system, through a signed webhook.
Once connected, agents can read orders, search products, and ask to cancel or return orders, all through your rules.
The bottom line
Agents will bring you orders and save your support team hours. But a store that lets them in without a gateway gives up control of its customers' accounts and its money. A gateway keeps the benefits and the control.
