Can AI assistants read your products? We checked 100 stores

Shoppers now ask ChatGPT and other assistants what to buy, and the assistants read your product pages to answer. In 100 stores we checked, almost all showed a readable price, but only 15% said what shipping costs and 19% stated a return policy. Here's how to check your store for free and fix it.

Assistants read your product pages before they recommend you

When someone asks an AI assistant "a leather bag under 100 dollars, delivered this week", the assistant looks at store pages to answer. Before it recommends a product, it wants to know four things for sure: the price, whether it's in stock, what delivery costs, and whether it can be returned.

It trusts what it can read as data (the schema.org Product information in your page) more than text it has to guess from. What it can't read, it can't promise the shopper. And a store that leaves the shopper's questions unanswered is easy to skip for one that answers them.

What we found in 100 stores

We ran the new product check of Allowfy Check on 100 online stores from our earlier study. We could read the product pages of 68 of them (the rest had no product pages we could find, or didn't load). Of those 68:

  • 84% had product data an assistant can read, and every one of them gave a price.
  • 95% of those said whether the product is in stock.
  • Only 15% said what shipping costs or how long delivery takes.
  • Only 19% stated a return policy.
  • 91% had at least one of these to fix.

So the price is there almost everywhere. Shipping and returns, the next two questions every shopper asks, almost never are.

Check your store, free

Allowfy Check now has a Products part. Enter your domain and it:

  1. Finds up to three of your product pages, from your sitemap or your home page.
  2. Opens them the way an AI assistant does.
  3. Tells you, in one sentence, how much of what an assistant looks for it could read: product data, price, stock, shipping and returns.

It only reads your public pages, like a visitor. Nothing is added to a cart and no order is placed. It works for Shopify, WooCommerce, Salla, Zid and any other site.

Fix it, step by step for your platform

In the free Allowfy account, each problem comes with steps for the platform your store runs on (Allowfy detects it), and text to paste where it helps:

  • Shipping and returns: fill in a short form (where you ship, what it costs, how many days, how many days to return) and get one block of schema.org data that states them for every page. Paste it once, and the shipping and return checks turn green.
  • robots.txt: if your store blocks AI assistants, the exact lines that let them in.
  • llms.txt: a draft written from your store's own name, description and products.

Where a platform doesn't let you change something (Salla and Zid manage robots.txt, for example), the steps say so plainly and tell you what to ask support for.

Then let Allowfy keep watching

Pages change: a new theme, an app, a setting. Watch your store in Allowfy and it's checked again every month, with an email when something gets worse.

And if your store is connected to Allowfy, the same page shows how many of your orders came from AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others, with the sales from each. This works for Shopify and WooCommerce, which record where an order's visit came from. Salla and Zid don't share that with apps yet, so we don't guess.

The bottom line

AI assistants are becoming a new shop window, and they recommend what they can understand. Most stores already show the price. Telling assistants what delivery costs and how returns work is a small change that answers the shopper's next question before they ask it.
